Have you ever been wondering where the foreigners live the happiest lives? Each year InterNations, the world’s largest network for people who live and work abroad, release a report presenting the best and worst places to live for expats. In 2017 the top one was Costa Rica.
In 2017 InterNations asked 14,300 people living overseas, representing 174 nationalities and living in 191 countries or territories, to rate 43 different aspects of living abroad on a scale of 1-7. One of the criteria was a personal happiness. Take a short look at the top 5 countries.
Number 5. Ecuador
In the InterNations’ list of the best countries to live for expats, Ecuador fell 16 places in the quality of life index (compared to the 2016 year). However, if we take a look at personal happiness, foreigners say it’s one of the best places on earth for a happy life. Why? Because the cost of living is really low and the weather is beautiful. Also, locals are very friendly and you can find there very diverse options to live. You can live in the colonial splendour of Ecuador cities, explore Amazon jungle or buy a small hose on the beach. A good option is also visiting the world’s most famous archipelago, the Galapagos Islands where you’ll see the different animals, such as the giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions or sea turtles.
Number 4. Philippines
The Philippines means perfect beaches, beautiful nature, low cost of living and friendly people with a tremendous sense of humour. Additionally, when it comes to ecological concerns, the Philippines seems to be one step ahead than other countries in Southeast Asia. Nature is also stunning. With around 2,800 different species of fish and 5,000+ species of clams, the Philippines are one of the best countries for scuba diving in the world. Foreigners will easily feel at home right on their first visit because everybody is so friendly and helpful. You can also notice very strong bonds of family and friendship which can even surprise you at the beginning.
Number 3. Mexico
In the country ranks, Mexico is the number one in terms of settling in, the weather and friendliness. It is also a place with a unique culture and history – you will meet there the highest amount of tourists in Latin America. That’s why Mexico offers a variety of opportunities to explore its ancient historical landmarks. Also, the cuisine is tremendously delicious! You can taste there tamales, tacos and quesadillas and other dishes not found anywhere else. For chocolate lovers – dating back to 1100 BC, the Aztecs were known to use cocoa in their drinks. Nowadays, you can find some authentic Aztec chocolate in the markets.
Number 2. Malta
Malta is the expats’ favourite destination in Europe because of the ease of settling in, low-cost living, beautiful weather and low language barrier. What’s more, the survey shows that personal happiness is very high because 70% of expats in Malta surveyed are in a relationship. In Malta, people are also traditionally kind-hearted and generous so you will feel like home there. The majority of people are willing to lend a helping hand if you need any assistance and almost everyone speaks English, so foreigners don’t have any problems to communicate.
